An Emergent Economics of Ecosystem Management AgEcon
Hearnshaw, Edward J.S.; Cullen, Ross; Hughey, Kenneth F.D..
Economics is an evolving and emerging field of study, so is the management of ecosystems. As such, this paper delineates the co-evolution of economic evaluation that reflects the various recognized ecosystem management approaches of anticipative, adaptive and capacitive ecosystem management. Each management approach is critiqued and from this theoretical analysis an emergent approach for the management of ecosystem is put forward, which accordingly suggests an alternative methodological approach for economic evaluations.

Paredes Romero, Janaina.

Integrated science and art education for creative climate change communication Ecology and Society
Jacobson, Susan K.; Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, University of Florida; jacobson@ufl.edu; Seavey, Jennifer R; Shoals Marine Laboratory; School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, University of New Hampshire; College of Agriculture and Life Science, Cornell University; jennifer.seavey@unh.edu; Mueller, Robert C; School of Art and Art History, University of Florida; bmueller@ufl.edu.
An interdisciplinary field trip to a remote marine lab joined graduate students from fine arts and natural resource science departments to think creatively about the topic of climate change and science communication. We followed a learning cycle framework to allow the students to explore marine ecosystems and participate in scientific lectures, group discussions, and an artist-led project making abstract collages representing climate change processes. Students subsequently worked in small groups to develop environmental communication material for public visitors. We assessed the learning activity and the communication product using pre- and post-field trip participant surveys, focus group discussions, and critiques by art and communication experts of the...

New Age, New Learners, New Skills: What Skills Do Graduates Need to Succeed in the New Economy? AgEcon
Noel, Jay E.; Qenani, Eivis.
The goal of this study was to improve the current understanding of labor market demands for various skills and attributes of college graduates. Changes such as globalization, technological advancements and the emergence of the knowledge economy have caused educational institutions to focus their attention in revising and redesigning their curriculum. The timely identification and the effective response to these changes requires that higher education revisits the issue of the set of skills essential to the economy and the labor market, and the best ways to transfer them to college graduates. A choice-based conjoint experiment was used to identify labor market preferences for college graduate attributes. A web survey with employers in the food and fiber...

On the Uneven Distribution of Innovative Capabilities and Why That Matters for Research, Extension and Development Policies AgEcon
Ekboir, Javier M.; Munoz, Manrrubio; Aguilar, Jorge; Mendel, Roberto Rendon; Muniz, Jose G. Garcia; Cardenas, J. Reyes Altamirano.
Agricultural development policies and programs, including extension and support for innovation, implicitly assume that the whole target population has the ability to innovate. Recent research in neuroscience, education, social sciences and psychology has shown that innovative capabilities are distributed very unevenly. We explored the distribution of innovative capabilities and the ability to integrate a technological package in a sample of commercial lemon producers in Mexico. We have found that the ability to explore new techniques is different from the ability to integrate an efficient production and commercial package. The ability to explore follows an exponential distribution while integration of the package follows a bimodal distribution. The ability...
